What Is Vacuum Casting & Why Is It Used?

Vacuum casting is an advanced technique that allows us to produce small-batch plastic parts through a cloning process. Our vacuum casting services are mostly used for prototype or end-use production and achieve immaculate results in every run. But, why is the method of vacuum casting prototyping used over other production approaches?

At Stephens Plastics, we strive to undergo a seamless process from start to finish for every project we are involved in. By adding vacuum casting to a manufacturing cycle, you are enabling batch production at rapid rates. Not to mention, you have a better chance of perfecting your products through this ingenious concept.

Continue reading for further information on vacuum casting and why it is becoming increasingly popular in the manufacturing industry.

What is the process of vacuum casting?

This two-component technology formed of polyurethanes and silicone moulds creates a high-quality prototype or end result. Our vacuum casting services begin with a master model that is produced by Stereolithography or Laser Sintering. After that, it is then set in a silicone cast. This cast is partially under a vacuum pressure to ensure air bubbles are avoided.

Once the silicone is set, the mould is then cut into pre-defined parting planes after curing. Finally, the master is removed and a cavity then remains, ready for copying.

Why is vacuum casting used so often?

Due to the silicone used, components are of the highest quality; the finished outcome is even comparable to injection moulded products. Because of these excellent results, vacuum cast models are ideal for function and fitting testing, manufacturing final parts and for marketing purposes.

Not to mention, this is a very versatile technique as we are able to adhere to your exact finishing needs using our vacuum casting services. Using materials such as rubber, ABS, PC and PP, we offer a range of properties, as well as the ability to mix colour shades and even create transparent products. Precision is always met with our vacuum casting prototyping. Consequently, giving you peace of mind that prototypes mirror the final product accurately.

Additionally, we can then mass-produce the final product with ease, abiding by your batch size.
