TPU / TPE

TPU / TPE

For extrusion and injection moulding applications, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), which is a subset of TPE, provide great flexibility as alternatives to natural rubber latex, silicone, and other compounds. TPE or TPU may be the compound of choice depending on the demands of your product and industry.

TPU vs TPE

TPE combines the properties of natural rubber latex with the manufacturing ability of plastics to produce a product with many of the same benefits. TPE is a common material in the medical and food and beverage industries because of its excellent properties such as flexibility, dimensional stability, chemical inertness, and more.

TPU is a type of soft polyether polyurethane that comes in a variety of hardness grades. When high abrasion resistance, excellent chemical resistance, and clarity are needed, such as in outdoor and medical applications, this is the compound to use.

Similarities

Colorability, transparency, durability, and elasticity are all advantages of TPE and TPU compounds. TPUs are a subset of TPEs, which are both block copolymers composed of various building blocks. Extrusion, injection moulding, and other plastics moulding processes may all benefit from these material groups. When reprocessed, neither content class loses structural integrity, allowing for the cost-effective reuse of manufacturing waste.

TPE Applications

TPEs are ideal for applications that need versatility, comfort, or cost savings over silicone. They’re a popular choice for medical tubing, such as surgical and dental tubing, as well as tubing for the food and beverage industry.

TPU applications

TPU is superior for use where ozone, extreme temperatures, and high levels of abrasion are a problem due to its resistance properties. TPU is a common material for sporting goods, tubing, wire, protective coatings, and more, in addition to medical applications.
